The Process For Obtaining a Full Class M Licence

There are several types of licences for driving Class M vehicles. There is a strict system of time restrictions, regulations, and a graduated licensing process that must be followed when getting a motorcycle license in Ontario.

 

Requirements For A Class M License

  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • You must meet the vision standards established by the Ministry Of Transportation.
  • You must pass a knowledge test of traffic signs, knowledge of motorcycles, and the rules of the road.
  • You must pass two road test classes, M2 and M, to become fully licensed.

Process For Obtaining A Full Class M Licence

Step 1
Study for the written knowledge test. (Practice here)

Step 2
Apply for a licence at the DriveTest Centre.

Step 3
Take a vision test at the DriveTest Centre.

Step 4
Pay the fees at the DriveTest Centre.

Step 5
Complete and pass the written knowledge test.

Step 6
Obtain your temporary driving license.

Step 7
Practice your driving with your Class M1 licence.

Step 8
After 60 days, book a road test and then take your Class M2 road test.

Step 9
Practice your driving with your Class M2 licence.

Step 10
Book a road test and then take your Class M road test.

Things To Know

  • The vision test takes a few minutes – if you need corrective lenses take them.
  • Fees can be paid by: Cash, Credit card, Debit card, Certified cheque, Bank draft, Money order, and Traveller’s cheque.
  • The temporary driver’s license is made of paper and is valid for 90 days.
  • The knowledge test takes approximately 30 minutes – no appointment is required.
  • If unsuccessful, you can try the road test again if your Class M2 licence has not expired.

When you have a Class M1 licence, you must:

  • Maintain a zero blood-alcohol level.
  • Wear an approved helmet.
  • Ride only during daylight hours (1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset).
  • Do not drive on 400-series highways or high-speed expressways.
  • Always drive alone — you may not carry passengers.
